Harbor View Grille in Whitehall with Bari, Nancy & Kelle







Our Harbor View Grille Adventure


Always up for an adventure, the Dining Divas decided to head northward to Harbor View Grille in Whitehall for our June review.  It's a little over a half-hour drive from the Tri-Cities area... a beautiful drive straight up US-31.

The Harbor View Grille is situated on White Lake, which connects to Lake Michigan via a narrow channel, so whether you're seated inside the restaurant or outdoors on the patio, there's a gorgeous view of the water.  In fact, Bari shared a story with us about running a sailboat aground on White Lake (we hope we're not embarrassing her by mentioning this snafu).

We arrived at the Harbor View on Friday (June 6) around 6:45 p.m., and were seated at an indoor table immediately.  (We opted to dine indoors, as it was a little on the cool side that evening).  A whiteboard at the entrance announced the evening's specials, which included deep-fried Montague asparagus as an appetizer and two different perch specials.

Nancy chose to try the Boffo Brown Ale, brewed by the Marshall, Michigan, Dark Horse Brewery.    It was excellent!  Bari chose a glass of cabernet.  And, we unanimously agreed that since it's the season for asparagus, we needed to sample Harbor View's deep-fried version (although we were also mighty tempted by the deep-fried onion rings).  And the asparagus was terrific!

With finger-food as a first course, Nancy said she wanted to use the restroom to wash her hands.  Upon returning to the table, she announced, "You have GOT to go wash your hands... it's AMAZING!"  

WHAT!?!  Anxious to check out the amazing hand-washing experience, off marched Kelle and Bari to the restroom.  What's so special is that Harbor View has an fragrant jar of hand scrub (plus soap, lotion and a bottle of mouthwash) on a ledge above the sink, which leaves your hands feeling smooth, silky, and oh-so-heavenly smelling.  (As we didn't venture into the men's room, we're not sure if the same is offered there.)  But, it's DEFINITELY worth a stop.

Kelle and Nancy ordered the evening's sauteed perch special, which features Lake Erie yellow perch.  It was accompanied by a fresh salad and served on a bed of rice, with sauteed vegetables.  Nancy recalled that in days of yore (1970s), an old Michigan joke was that if you fell into Lake Erie, you'd decay - not drown (due to polluted water).  But, massive clean-up efforts over the years have resulted in dramatic improvements in water quality, and a return to economically important fish species - like the fabled perch.

For dessert, we decided to try Harbor View's chocolate cake.  After all, who wouldn't be tempted by a description that features not only chocolate, but cream cheese!?!  We ate every bit of it... delicious!  (Bari says "speak for yourselves: she only tasted the whpped cream 'cause she's not a chocolate fan.")

On the return trip, the Divas drove South Shore Drive around White Lake when we noticed a sign for the Lakeside Inn.  (It's just past the golf course.)  Curious, we made the right turn, discovering it has risen from the ashes.   (Nancy was long gone and sound asleep through this part of the journey so she missed our little adventure!)  But Bari and Kelle left her in the car to snooze on her own and went inside to check out the new decor and menu.  They let us know it opened up a few months ago, so we decided it was worth a trip back this summer.  We saw a spectacular sunset while cruising on South Shore Drive, but just missed it setting at Duck Lake State Park where you are driving almost right next to Lake Michigan on a short stretch of the road.  A lot of the locals were lined up in their cars since they know this view is next to none.  The drive home made our entire evening a delightful adventure.  




Definitely worth ordering!



Kelle:  "This dish was so tasty and well-prepared.  I could only eat half of it and enjoyed the rest for lunch the next day.  This was only my second time to Harbor View Grille and I was anxious for Bari and Nancy to come.  I'm impressed with all the gluten free options on the menu and the fact that I can come back and get a juicy burger on a gluten free bun.  Next time it's a burger and the deck for me!"


Nancy:  "The perch was absolutely luscious… served in a lemon-y sauce, dusted in seasoned flour and pan fried.   Like Kelle, I couldn't finish it all… and particularly after the asparagus appetizer and generously sized tossed salad (plus, our waiter told us that all of Harbor View's salad dressings are homemade!). Nevertheless, I did make room for the yummy Triple Chocolate Cake.  ;-)  All in all, definitely worthy of an excursion to Whitehall!"


Bari:  "After seeing an order with onion rings, I knew that I'd have them.  My first choice was to join Kelle and Nancy with perch; however, I wanted it in a basket with those onion rings.  That was not to happen-perch was only available for the dinners-so I went to plan B:  a Mushroom Swiss Olive burger with onion rings.  My meal arrived and looked yummy and it was.  The bun was particularly delicious with the burger and the fixings.  The coleslaw was nice, but my focus was on diving into the burger and onion rings.  (I did share them with Nancy and Kelle)."






The jar in the middle made washing our hands so much fun since our skin was incredibly smooth and soft after using it.  We must confess that we washed our hands once we arrived AND again before leaving!

Diva Tips!

We tried to make a reservation since we were driving up on a Friday night, but you can only reserve a table for parties of eight or more.  You are within walking distance of a few shops in downtown Whitehall if you end up having a wait time.  (We were planning to peek inside Posh!)

Great place to sit outside on the deck for a mesmerizing view. 

If you're heading south and have the time after dinner, take the scenic route along South Shore Drive.  We saw a breathtaking view of the sunset along the way.

Crazy Horse Steakhouse & Saloon in Holland ~ "Hang a Dollar"

As our readers know, the Lakeshore Dining Divas aren’t only about food (though we admit that we’re “foodies”). We also like to spotlight people and organizations in the community that are truly making a difference… helping better people’s lives.  So, in recent months, we’ve focused on “Dancing with the Local Stars” (a Muskegon-based annual fundraiser for food pantries) and the Katty Shack 5K/1 mile Walk/Run to benefit The Crime Victim’s Foundation, to name a few.  

For our April dining adventure, we decided to visit the Crazy Horse Steakhouse & Saloon in Holland, a restaurant that is legendary for not only its steaks but also its generosity.  Dollar bills – hundreds of them! – that end up being donated to needy people and organizations are tacked onto the walls and tucked into just about every imaginable spot.  It’s a sight to behold. 

Our visit took place on Tuesday evening, April 29.  It’s only about a 15-minute drive from Grand Haven to this “Best of West Michigan” (voted ten years in a row) restaurant.

Kelle had never been to the Crazy Horse before, so Nancy insisted that we pause before entering so she could hear the horses. Sure enough!… if you linger outside the Crazy Horse, you can hear the sound of whinnying horses!  We arrived promptly at 6:00 p.m. and were seated almost immediately in a cozy booth.  The crowds started gathering shortly afterwards… but (fortunately!) Crazy Horse has both an indoor waiting area and benches outdoors.

Our cute and peppy waitperson (Suzanne) was a real delight… friendly, full of recommendations and always smiling. When we asked her how long she’d been working at Crazy Horse, she replied, “I’ve been here so long, I can’t even remember… 15 years?  17 years?  Something like that.”  Since employee turnover in restaurants can be as high as 100 percent (or more!), we found this absolutely incredible.  What loyalty!  Obviously, the Crazy Horse’s owner and management team pay attention to and take good care of their staff. 

So… back to the dollar bills.  The Crazy Horse’s website proclaims, “Thanks to the Crazy Horse customers, we’ve donated over $100,000 to date.”  When dollar bills tacked up with push-pins started to appear on the restaurant’s walls over 15 years ago, the Crazy Horse began donating them to charity.  According to Suzanne, Hurricane Katrina victims were first.  Over the years, donated dollars have gone towards Haiti Relief Efforts, 9/11 Relief, VOX United, Breast Cancer Research, Women in Transition, Benjamin’s Hope, The Outdoor Discovery Center, and countless other worthy causes.  

A few days later we had a chance to talk to the owner, Mark Herman, and this is what he told us!

"I am very fortunate to have such a long term and incredible staff. I have had the restaurant for 18 plus years and in that time I have had one restaurant manager, Heather Laninga, and one Chef, Ryan Lanning. This promotes a long term staff and consistent food quality, and yet another reason we have been awarded "Best Restaurant" in Holland for eleven years in a row!  
The dollar bills on the walls began with one customer many, many years ago and it caught on.  Now we get so many dollar bills on the walls that I donate them to local charities and people in need. We have donated over $100,000.00 in the past 15 years!  It has become our story."

"Since Suzanne said that the Crazy Horse's Tenderloin Filet was her personal favorite, I decided to give it a try.  After 17 years working there, I figured it had to be good!  It came with your choice of soup or salad (I chose the basic salad) and a side dish ("Side Saddle").  I opted for the Maple Pecan Mashed Sweet Potatoes as my side dish, which was delicious.



My tenderloin also was served accompanied by sautéed garlic butter mushrooms, which were fantastic.  Even Kelle (a non-mushroom fan) had to agree.  So, the photo doesn't do justice to my succulent steak... it looked - and tasted- far better than what you see here."

"Walking into the Crazy Horse reminded me of being in Houston again and brought back good memories.  I've been living on the lakeshore a little over three years and don't venture to Holland very much.  So I was eager to go some place new and different.
I had no doubt I was going to order a steak and decided on a medium rare New York Strip.  Wow ~ I couldn't believe it took up the whole plate!  I wasn't able to finish it so my dogs and I enjoyed some the next day. Yup, they are steak lovers too! I was stuffed and didn't think dessert was a possibility, but Suzanne said we have to try a bite size one to share. I'm glad we did since it was just enough to satisfy a sweet tooth without feeling like you over-indulged.  It's nice to have those bite size options. 

Crazy Horse is one of a kind and unique in the way they go about helping others.  I loved seeing all the dollar bills hanging on the wall and couldn't wait to tack on a few of my own.  Be sure to check out the back wall before you leave and see all the people that benefited by patrons sharing the love."

Two Tonys Taverna Grille in Spring Lake with 5K Guest Divas!

We liked the Two Tonys description on their menu and website so much that we decided to include it right here in our review in case you haven't been there!  





"Two Tonys were born a few years apart but thousands of miles away from one another. Tony Moulatsiotis was raised in Kalamata, Greece and Tony Tague in Grand Haven, Michigan. Yet their destinies would eventually cross. 

In Greece, Tony enjoyed a simpler life and grew to appreciate the unique flavors and spices of Mediterranean cuisine. His hometown is famous worldwide for its view of the Aegean sea, its rolling hills and the olive trees which bear the Kalamata olive and give us some of the best olive oil in the world. 

Meanwhile, Tony Tague followed his love of the law and moved out east to the Washington D.C. and New York City area. Tony grew to love the big city steakhouses, but especially the small ethnic neighborhoods and their integral family restaurants, particularly New York's Little Italy. Tony loved the narrow streets lined with family restaurants that would entice you with the aroma of freshly baked breads and simmering marinara. Every one of us ordered a different entree whether it had a Greek, Italian, or seafood flair.  We simply loved the variety we had to choose from on the menu.  One of the nice things about dining out with a group of eight is getting to see what all the other entrees look like, and by sharing a nibble, we get a taste of what we can order the next time we come back.  

After our dinner and dessert we motioned Tony Tague over to our table and told him we are writing a review on our dining adventure.  We told our Guest Divas we don't announce our coming in advance, so he thought Joan just gathered a group of friends for a fun night out.  We had heard he was a big supporter of the Katty Shack event by supplying a nice spaghetti and meatballs with marinara sauce dinner at St. Patrick's Church the night before the event.  Lots of folks show up for the dinner to fuel up and buy raffle tickets to win some really nice prizes...like massages or tickets to an event.  

We asked Tony to share his thoughts on the event and he replied:

"The Tri-cities area has been so warm and welcoming to Two Tonys since our venture began in 2006, and as a Grand Haven native, I felt welcomed back home. As a former career prosecutor and public servant, I have devoted my life to giving back to the community and want to do so in my new role as restaurateur.  The Katty Shack event provides a perfect opportunity to give back in a way dear to my heart which is supporting victims of crime.  I commend Natalie and Joan for taking a tragic event and turning it into a positive for the community.  Two Tonys is a proud sponsor of Katty Shack and seeing the sense of community at our annual Katty Shack spaghetti dinner makes an Italian restaurant owner proud."

          What a pleasure dining with our Guest Divas ~ Natalie and Joan!  

These awesome women are incredibly busy year round organizing what is now the 5th Annual Katty Shack 5K Memorial Run/Walk that is held in Grand Haven.  100% of the proceeds collected from the race benefit the Crime Victim Foundation in Michigan. They are truly passionate about the race, and especially knowing that hundreds of people are going to benefit from their efforts.   


But there's a reason Katty Shack was started and we want to share their story.

An identical pair of sneakers was the catalyst that forged a strong friendship in the midst of a heinous crime for Ottawa county residents Natalie Kik-Brown and Joan Grillo in 2009. As a result of those sneakers and one idea, victims of crime have been supported in numerous ways.

Kik-Brown and Grillo, formed Katty Shack, a 5k and 1 mile run in Grand Haven in 2010 in honor of the quadruple murder victims in Wright Township on September 28, 2008. The victims included Kik-Brown’s daughter Katherine Brown, 18, and three Zimmer family members, Sharmaine Zimmer, 53; Jeremy Zimmer, 20; and Tyler Zimmer, 17.

The event is held in April to honor National Crime Victims Rights Week and the 2014 event will be held on Saturday, April 26th. Since its inception, Katty Shack has raised $37.5k with all proceeds benefiting the Crime Victim Foundation.

During the two week murder trial, Grillo, the Victim Rights Coordinator for Ottawa County, noticed Kik-Brown putting on her sneakers during breaks and taking long walks. Grillo had the same identical sneakers and they started talking about running. From there the Katty Shack idea was born. Katty Shack was the nickname for Kik-Brown's daughter, Katherine, from her cross country teammates at Coopersville High School.

“We had to do something positive to honor their memory,” said Kik-Brown.

“We prayed if we could get at least 50 people together we would be so happy,” said Grillo.

Kik-Brown has been a marathon runner since 1998 and has run in over 38 marathons in 26 states as well as Brazil, Germany, and Antarctica. Her daughter, Katherine, started running in the 8th grade in cross country. Every now and then they ran together and participated in a few 5k’s.

The Crime Victim Foundation covers all 83 counties in Michigan. Normally the perpetrator is court ordered to reimburse the victim, but sometimes certain expenses aren’t covered. “Someone might need gas money or hotel lodging for a trial and that would be considered,” said Grillo. “The foundation is a last resort for victims when all other means of support have been exhausted. The victim might need new locks, a new door, or a window replaced. This is for someone that can’t financially afford anything extra in their bills that month. There is an application process and a one-time grant in the amount of $500.00.”

“The Zimmer family is very much involved in this as well,” said Kik-Brown. “We have experienced a world broken beyond what is comprehensible. How could someone commit such a heinous act - a question on this earth that will never be answered. However, through all of this, families, friends, and communities came together comforting and supporting one another. Katty Shack is that and does that each year as we lovingly remember Katherine, Jeremy, Tyler and Sharmaine and others who have been victims of violent crime. We remember and honor them in an uplifting and joyous way with an event that, quite frankly, is great fun.”

Grillo and Kik-Brown said they are incredibly grateful for all the people that are involved with donations and sponsorships. “We couldn’t do it without all the support we get from the surrounding communities,” said Kik-Brown.

From the very beginning it was their desire for Katty Shack to be unique enough to continually draw runners, walkers, novice, and seasoned participants. They also wanted to add a special touch to the event that would set it apart. Grillo brought up the idea of pink shoelaces since pink was Katherine’s favorite color. As they continued to ponder the idea, they decided to offer a rainbow of colors to the race participants. The rainbow is the theme for Katty Shack and a symbol of the four homicide victims. Race participants receive rainbow shoelaces as a gift at the end of the race.

During the week of the tragedy, three rainbows were present on different days. Kik-Brown, the Zimmer family and friends felt it was a message from the victims telling everyone they were okay. Since then, several rainbows have appeared during past Katty Shack race weeks and in September recognizing the anniversary of their deaths.

“In fact, one year on the day of the murder a double rainbow appeared,” said Kik-Brown. “Each of the four is represented in the rainbow as a color. Katherine is pink; Sharmaine collected Precious Moments which represents many of the colors; Tyler loved farming so we think of yellow and green for him; Jeremy was an MSU fan and green was his color. They left this earth together and I think sometimes they come to visit and say hello as one in a beautiful rainbow.”

Joan:  "When I was invited to be a Guest Diva with the Lakeshore Dining Divas, I was thrilled for a couple of reasons.  First, the Divas were also honoring Natalie Kik-Brown, a dear friend with whom I’ve worked closely on the Katty Shack Walk/Run, which benefits the Crime Victim Foundation.  Secondly, the Divas chose Two Tonys Taverna Grille as their dining destination.  What a treat!  Having dined previously at Two Tonys, I have always been impressed with the food, the service and the big-city atmosphere… right in the Village of Spring Lake!

We were seated at what Tony Tague said had been dubbed “The Mayor’s Table,” nestled amidst hundreds of bottles of wine. The restaurant and bar were lively and packed.  The wine list is extensive with an impressive array of wines from both California and Italy.  I chose to sample the Pinot Grigio. Our servers, Andrew and Rob, were friendly and attentive… always a treat when dining out!

Now on to my meal: I ordered Salmon Wellington – a special menu item that evening.  This interesting take on the classic dish did not disappoint this Catholic girl who, to this day, doesn’t eat meat on Fridays.  The presentation was fantastic – golden brown and perfectly crisp pastry surrounding a delectable and generous portion of salmon.  The lobster cream sauce was the perfect accompaniment to the dish, and the chef certainly did not skimp on the lobster pieces.  The salmon was served with al dente grilled asparagus… absolutely perfecto!

For dessert, the Divas decided to share one order of “Colossal Carrot Cake,” which Wendi (Two Tonys pastry chef) cut into eight pieces for us.  Moist and delicious, this carrot cake truly is “colossal”!

Later in the evening, Chef Michel mingled about the dining room, so I asked him about the salmon.  He told me that it was flown in fresh twice weekly, and cut to order on-site.  (No wonder it’s so amazing!)  

As you can tell, my evening was perfect: fun-filled atmosphere, wonderful service and lively conversation with a great group of gals (er, Divas)."


Suzanne:  "As always, I decided to play it safe and ordered the "Two Tony's Salmon" dinner ($19) and opted to have it wood fried ... one of several ways it can be prepared...very tasty!  I also chose the herb roasted potatoes which were great.  However, I wish that I would have picked the rice instead as I think it would have suited the salmon better ... coupled with the delish vegetable medley!  Over all, the place was busy and full of good energy making it just perfect to catch up with the Divas and to make new friends with our lovely guests!"


Nancy:  "As the saying goes, "When in Rome, do as the Romans."  Or, when in Greece, do as the Grecians!

It always amazes me that there aren't more Greek restaurants in the area.  So, I decided to order the Gyros plate, which is basically a flat (unrolled) gyros sandwich and comes served with rice (topped by a red Greek sauce) and a dill pickle spear ($12.50).  Since I love the tzatziki (cucumber yogurt) sauce that traditionally smothers a gyros, I probably should have requested a little more... it was THAT good!

The gyros plate is also served with your choice of salad - house, Greek or Caesar.  I chose the Caesar, without croutons and with anchovies, which run $1.00 extra.  But, as I've said before (and Melody concurs), what's a Caesar salad without anchovies!?!

A fun evening, especially since we all learned more about a wonderful cause and I got to play matchmaker in reconnecting two long-time friends."


Melody:  "The Moussaka ($12) was excellent and a very nice portion. It came with soup or salad, and I had the Greek salad that had a very nice vinegar & oil dressing. The red wine I chose was the Noro D'Avola ($8), not too dry and not too sweet, just how I like it. I normally get a red Zin, but this was just as good.  Over all it was a very pleasant evening; which came with a wonderful surprise. A dear friend (Marie McKendall - Professor of Management at GVSU), I haven't seen in over 15 years, was sitting at the table when I arrived."   


Kelle:  "I love the atmosphere of Two Tonys and felt whisked away by all the good energy in the restaurant that Friday night.  I've been saying all along that Two Tonys has the best pizza in town, and I get the same one every time I go there... a gyros pizza on gluten free crust.  It is scrumptious!  However, I decided to try something new and different this time and went for the "Two Tonys House Chop" ($18).  A part of me wanted to see if you could really cut it with a fork like the menu states.  They brought out a big knife with the entree, which I never even needed.  It was so tender and juicy, and irresistibly good.  Plus I got to enjoy the rest of it for lunch the next day. Now after seeing all the other entrees, I know I'll be back to order a few of those too!"  


Carla:  "I'm a huge fan of scallops and order them often.  When the waiter took my order and I mentioned that I'd pass on the starch, he quickly told me I could have double vegetables.  Wonderful!  The scallops were done beautifully and the vegetables were an excellent pairing.  I was delighted that the well-trained waiter made it easy for me to order the perfect meal.   The house Chardonnay was also a good choice."


Natalie:  "The Salmon Wellington was beautifully placed on the dish with bright green asparagus atop and aside, topped with a lobster cream sauce.  The puff pastry was stuffed with fresh salmon, cheese, fresh herbs, and baby spinach, certainly enough for two meals.  The pastry was baked to a golden brown, flakey, easily cut with a fork.  All ingredients easily complemented each other with perfection.  A wonderful meal with a group of delightful ladies was enjoyed!"

Suzi's Village Inn for Breakfast with Divo Reviewers!

Our First Breakfast Review!  







When one of Nancy's GVSU Seidman College of Business graduate students, Nathan Bair, asked if the Divas would ever consider a breakfast review, we were right on board and decided some homemade comfort food was in order while the wintry weather raged on.   We don't need to don our fancy-schmancy attire every time we dine out, and we really enjoy our local hometown favorites.  Kelle immediately thought of Suzi's Village Inn located in Fruitport for the occasion.  Why?  She said the food is consistently delicious with generous portions, reasonable prices, friendly service, and they always keep your coffee cup full.  Oh, we must mention they have a few gluten-free selections on the menu as well.  

Four of the Divas were unable to make our Monday morning breakfast debut in February due to out-of-town travel or work schedules.  Since it was Nathan's idea, we decided he should be a part of the review and bring one of his best buds, Paul Jabaay, who is also a graduate student at GVSU.  It ended up being a great idea and so much fun having two Divo reviewers on board (so we feel quite sure we need to do this again in the near future!).  Did we mention they are regular readers of our reviews?  So to Bari, Carla, Suzanne, and Melody - eat your hearts out (pardon the pun)!  

It was a first time appearance at Suzi's for everyone except Kelle.  Our server, Lindsay, was very friendly and attentive.  Since the Divas don't announce the fact that we're doing a review, we had a few questionable looks as to why we were taking pictures of eggs and bacon!  Speaking of bacon, it doesn't get any better than this - no fatty pieces and plenty of it.  

When Paul told us he is a certified biscuits and gravy connoisseur (in five states!) we anxiously awaited his response, so you'll have to read his comments to find out what he thinks about this homemade version!   We have to admit that the high calorie count was only mentioned once, followed up by Paul saying, "I've been up since 5:00 am and already went to the gym."  So we thought he deserved the full order of biscuits and gravy.  Kelle got a half order and said, "I plan to exercise later and savor every bite for now."  

Everyone walked away with a feeling of complete satisfaction and a thumbs up to the staff at Suzi's Village Inn.  You can't miss it on the main drag in Fruitport with plenty of space for parking.  In case you miss breakfast, they serve lunch, and close at 2:00 pm everyday.  

While on our way to the cash register to pay for our breakfast, we saw a woman with her laptop and payroll cards sitting at a corner table.  We assumed she might be the owner, so we decided to introduce ourselves and let her in on our upcoming review.  We asked Jenny Locke if she would give us a little history on this Fruitport gem!   






"The restaurant has been standing since 1946 and has had a few names. In 1986 my mom became manager of Village Inn with an agreement of ownership in five years. In 1991 she became the owner and renamed it Suzi's Village Inn. 

When I was 13 years old, I started working at the restaurant waiting tables. I put myself through nursing school and was an RN for seven years before my mom passed away in April 2004. I decided to keep the restaurant going and officially bought the restaurant from my mother's estate in February 2005. 

Our customers are like family. Some of our customers are second and third generations. Most of our employees have been here for years. Lyndsay Randall, your server, has been an employee for two and a half years. She recently got her bachelors in nursing degree from GVSU and passed her state boards. Now she is in the doctorate of nursing program at GVSU.

Many of our menu items are homemade, including the gravy for our biscuits and gravy.  We receive fresh baked bread from HodgePodge Bakehouse  in Muskegon.  We run daily breakfast and lunch specials and our soups are homemade daily."

"I ordered the Sheep Herders’ Breakfast ($6.75), one of the Village Inn’s specialties, which the menu describes as Two eggs fixed any way you like them, served on hash browns with onions and Cheddar cheese, and your choice of ham, bacon or sausage, and toast.”  I chose fried eggs (over easy), bacon and sourdough toast.  The bacon was thick and smoky-good.  And with the gooey melted cheddar cheese, the hash browns were so yummy that I declined to add even a dollop of ketchup (something I usually do).  In fact, everything was delicious!"







"I've made several visits to Suzi's Village Inn the past few years I've been in Michigan and certainly enjoy the consistently good breakfast and friendly service.  I tend to be a creature of habit when I like something and order the same thing - two eggs over easy, crispy hash browns with onions, bacon, and gluten-free toast.  So I got it again and it didn't disappoint!  Our server, Lindsay, frequently checked on our table (she didn't know we were doing a review) and kept our coffee cups full the whole time.  Even on a busy weekend, there is always someone walking around with a coffee pot refilling cups.  I don't usually order biscuits and gravy (for diet reasons only), but couldn't resist getting the half order since we had been talking about it.  So yummy and very filling!   

A few days later (Saturday) I met my mother, sister, cousin, and his wife for breakfast around 8:30 am.  This time I decided to try the Village Stacker and couldn't believe how much food was sitting before me.  I could only eat half of it and told the others that two people could easily split it." 





Nathan Bair is a Spring Lake native with a love of breakfast. He works at Grand Valley’s, Seidman College of Business in the Management Department. 

Breakfast at Suzi’s was excellent. Since everyone else got ‘exciting’ dishes, I decided to go with the standards: scrambled eggs, sausage links, and a pancake. The scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly, the sausage was flavorful, and the pancake was a just the right amount of fluffy! And of course there was the added bonus that my coffee cup never had a chance to go dry (and that’s saying something!)…Also, I might have snuck a bite of the savory biscuits and gravy, which can hold their own against anyone else’s!”









Paul is currently finishing up his MBA from Grand Valley State University.  Born and raised in Grand Rapids, he spent most of his childhood summers camping at the lakeshore state parks with his family.  He intends to continue the tradition with his family one day.


"Breakfast at Suzi's Village Inn is something to be experienced by all on the lakeshore.  I came into the humble setting with no expectations and left with a stomach beyond satisfied and taste buds craving more.  As per my usual breakfast order, I must always try the sausage biscuits and gravy.  It is by far my absolute favorite meal in the morning and I have eaten it all over the country.  Needless to say, I had some high hopes for this sausage gravy and boy did Suzi deliver!  Their sausage gravy is undeniably one of the top 3 candidates for best sausage gravy I have ever tried.  Thick chunks of breakfast sausage with an excellent smokey brown color, and a light flavoring of sage which complimented nicely the sausage flavor.  Just spectacular!  


The meal I ordered was a concoction I have never had before: first layer was fresh sourdough toast, layered with perfectly crispy hash browns, smothered with some of the best sausage gravy this side of the Mississippi, topped with some scrambled eggs.  All I can say is WOW!  The portions were just... huge, enough for me to take home for a second meal (which was just as good warmed up, and left me wanting to go back for more).  Needless to say, I will definitely be coming back as it was totally worth the 30 minute drive from Grand Rapids!"
