"Award Winning" Hearthstone Bistro in Muskegon

According to one of the Dining Divas, "I don't think I know anyone who's ever been disappointed with Hearthstone... it's just always good."  So, it should come as no surprise that TripAdvisor lists The Hearthstone as the #1-ranked restaurant in Muskegon of 188 restaurants!

The Divas decided to visit The Hearthstone on Saturday night, November 15th.  Readers who are hunters obviously recognize that date; it's the opening day of deer season.  So despite the allure of trudging through snow in Michigan's northern deep woods, every seat in the house was filled.

The Hearthstone was founded by Frank and Gina Lister in 1975, and features a casual European Bistro with a cuisine that uses fresh, local, natural ingredients.  In addition to the relaxed, indoor dining room, Hearthstone offers a lush European-inspired garden terrace for outdoor dining in the summer.  It also features a gluten-free menu and vegetarian selections.  

Our table for four was waiting for us when we arrived at 6:30 pm.  Alexis, our (delightful!) server greeted us and took our drink orders promptly... one chardonnay, one zinfandel, one cabernet sauvignon, and one sparkling water (with lemon and lime).

Carla:  "I was so happy to see the return of the White Lasagna!  I enjoyed it a year ago when it was on the menu and wanted to go back the same week and have it again.  Oh, wait, I did!  If you dine there soon and it's on the menu, order it.  You will not be disappointed.  I loved it so much that I purposely took half home to savor the next night.  That was an incredible achievement for me considering how tasty it was."



Classic Steak Frites with Roasted Garlic Butter - 8 oz tenderloin steak, served with pommes frites (skinny French fries) and creamed spinach.  $24

Nancy:  "The steak was melt-in-your-mouth good, and the creamed spinach was luscious."   





"Award Winning" Crispy Almond & Brioche Yellow Belly Lake Perch, served with pommes frites and housemade coleslaw.  $18 for 5-piece plate, $24 for 7-piece plate.

Bari:  "I had a mental debate about the entrees; there are so many tempting choices.  Settling on the perch (5-pieces), I was not disappointed.  The crispy almond brioche complimented as did the tartar sauce.  The pommes frites were just right for me:  crispy not over or underdone.  The coleslaw was okay, but I enjoyed the perch and pommes frites more.  The evening was delightful and I look forward to a return visit sooner rather than later."

Kelle:  "On the menu the scallops are offered on a bed of Israeli couscous and red quinoa, but I opted for the yukon gold mashed potatoes since I just made red quinoa at home the night before.  Either way, the scallops were out of this world delicious!  I love dining at the Hearthstone!"

Diva Tips:

If you're hoping to dine on a weekend night, make reservations well in advance.

The "Crispy Goat Cheese 'Fritter' with Roasted Beets" on Hearthstone's Specialty Salads menu sounds terribly tempting.  Served with grilled asparagus, toasted pine nuts and a balsamic vinaigrette, beet-lovers Kelle and Nancy decided they'd have to return to order it for lunch.

The Hearthstone features two-fer dining specials (2 for $24) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights.  Monday is Two Moo Monday (two Bistro steaks, pommes frites and a side salad), Tuesday is Two Perch Tuesday, and Wednesday is Pasta/Pasta.

Dee-Lite Bar & Grill in Grand Haven & ArtWalk 2014


For our October dining adventure, the Lakeshore Dining Divas returned to our hometown of Grand Haven.  No more criss-crossing Ottawa county, or dashing off to Grand Rapids.

We chose Thursday evening, October 9th, to try out the new Taqueria menu at the Dee-Lite, which also turned out to be the night that the 2014 ArtWalk awards were announced.  So, before settling into Mexican fare at the Dee-Lite, we stopped by the Tri-Cities Historical Museum to hear the announcement of the winners.

The Dee-Lite is known for their classic breakfast service (with a Bloody Mary Bar on the weekend!).  They added a new cozy bar (with fabulous lighting!) featuring all local beers, top notch tequila, a Burger Bar, and a Taqueria Bar. We've all been to the Dee-Lite for breakfast, so dinner was a new adventure.   

In addition to Kelle, Bari and Nancy, we had two guests: Heidi Sunderhaft and Terri Sesselmann from Muskegon.  So our circular table was perfect for five!

As soon as Terri Sesselmann mentioned we need to try the Made to Order Guacamole, we were immediately on board.  It was fabulous! Made at the bar, it includes avocado (both mashed and yummy chunks), fresh lime, cilantro, pico de gallo, garlic, salt and pepper, and is served with fresh corn tortilla chips.  To go with that guacamole, Heidi and Nancy both ordered House Margaritas, which they said were wonderful (it's made with El Jimador tequila (the #1 selling tequila in Mexico), fresh lime, simple syrup, and Cointreau.  Ole!





We started our evening out at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum downtown Grand Haven for the ArtWalk closing ceremony where the winners were announced.

We walked over to the DeeLite Bar & Grill for dinner.  The ambiance was beautiful at night.  But reading the menu was a bit challenging.  Grateful for iPhones with flashlights!




Guest Diva Heidi Sunderhaft Christiansen is the Principal of the Middle School and High School at North Muskegon.  We were able to steal her away on a "school night" for a dining adventure!
Heidi's Review:  

"Two things that go well with dining out; good food and friends and both were addressed the evening of October 9th at Dee-Lite in Grand Haven.  However, to top off the food and friends, the opportunity to be surrounded by ART before our dining experience was a “Delight” within after being exposed to the ArtWalk in Grand Haven. 

I have always known the Dee-Lite as the happening breakfast place in Grand Haven, so when I was invited to join the Dining Divas for dinner, I didn’t know what to expect for an evening meal.   I was surprised that the menu consisted of a Mexican flare.  When my eyes came across a Chimichanga, I knew I was sold.  Our group had ordered Guacamole with chips for an appetizer, which I would order again; chunks of avocados and spiced just right.  We should have ordered two!!

I decided to go with the Chimichanga, which I consider “comfort food”.  It was filled with chicken and smothered in their special sauce which created a mouthwatering experience with every bite. Terri ordered the same thing and was equally satisfied, but initially wanted the perch that evening, which Dee-Lite was sold out of.   I would say the serving size was decent and priced appropriately at $9.50.  
We had to use our lights from our cell phones to read the menu was enough comedy for the evening! 

Our server was pleasant and the owner, Steve Loftis, was friendly!

Oh, I forgot to mention the Margaritas were divine.  I would absolutely be back for Guacamole and a Margarita."

Grove Restaurant in Grand Rapids Includes Men in Plaid!








Grove.  A restaurant with a very short name and a big story to tell.  It's in the Eastown area in Grand Rapids.  And it describes itself as "A Celebration of Fresh, Artfully Crafted Cuisine."  We'd heard a lot about it, and after having visited the restaurant, we couldn't agree more!  Open only since 2012, it rapidly achieved recognition as one of Grand Rapids' top restaurants.  

The Grove is also distinctive in that it features menu items that contain fresh, locally-grown (and locally-raised) ingredients... like Van Eerden,  Miedema Produce, Inc., Otto's Chicken in Middleville (which raises "the freshest, antibiotic- and hormone-free chicken"), Ham Family Farm in Allendale (popular vendor at the Farmer's Market in Grand Haven), the well-known fourth-generation business Heffron Farms in Belding, and The Fish Monger's Wife (Muskegon).

We visited the Grove on Friday evening, September 12.  Our reservation was at 6:30 p.m.  And, since Bari was traveling in France, Spain, and Italy , we invited a "Substitute Diva" to join us for the evening - Cari Draft, the Owner/Founder of EcoTrek Fitness (famous for its Whole Food Bars, which you can pick up at Meijer). So our table for four included Carla Hill, Kelle Lynn, Nancy Levenburg, and Cari Draft.  

It seems only natural that a restaurant that features farm-to-market cuisine would have a menu that's constantly changing.  So, Grove displays its menu on high-tech, easy-to-navigate tablet computers.

Nancy chose the S&S Chicken Liver Pate as her first course (Kelle wish she had too!), which was delicious... served with pickled plums and plum jam.

As a second course, Cari chose the "Crispy Mushroom Cannelloni":  local mushrooms, goat cheese, roasted leeks, cipollini onions, farm beans and an onion soubise (basically a roux with onion purée)... to die for!  This was melt-in-your-mouth delicious with every bite.  We later learned that Cipollini onions (pronounced chip-oh-lee-knee) are usually grown in the wild and are difficult to find.  Definitely worth the searchhowever, as they are so mellow and sweet.

As a third course we pictured the Jamaican Jerk Braised 4H Pork Shoulder. The sweet-spicy jerk sauce paired with veggies and the crunch of pumpkin seeds was outstanding.  

Dessert?  Oh my!!!  We tried two: the Salted Dark Chocolate Fudge ($5) and a trio of ice cream and sorbet ($5).  The Fudge dessert (pictured on top) was scrumptious; "brown butter dipped Field & Fire brioche", with a bourbon syrup and creme fraiche.  Perfect portions to share and not feel overdone.  We enjoyed them all, with the smoked peach sorbet as our least favorite.  

Everything on Grove's menu is priced individually.  However, "Taste of Grove" at $35 offers you the opportunity to choose three items as your first, second and third courses.  We declined to order appetizers - "Snacks" on Grove's menu - which are priced at one for $5, three for $12, or five for $18.  In fact, in retrospect, we think it might be pretty easy to make a meal on snacks alone.  





We loved our server, Nathan, since he called every one of us "Miss" the entire evening!

We got a kick out of the fact that the two men next to our table had on the exact same shirt.  Then we looked around the room and noticed there were a total of eight men wearing plaid that night!  



We enjoyed a Vanilla Sour Cream Ice Cream, a Ginger Berry Sorbet, and a Smoked Peach Sorbet along with our fudge.  




Diva Tips:

Make a reservation well in advance.  We made our reservation about three weeks in advance; Grove was packed.  And there's only limited seating in the bar.  

Plan for a 45-minute drive from the lakeshore, because if you want to park on the street, you'll probably need to set aside a few minutes looking for a parking place.  Brewery Vivant is right next door...a popular spot for downtown GR college students.  Grove, however, offers valet parking for $10.

If you're a twosesome that prefers smaller portions, you might consider either the smaller plates or splitting the "Three Courses for $35."  In fact, Nancy ran into a couple from Spring Lake who were doing precisely that (sharing three courses) pre-symphony.

Arabian Adventure in Dubai with Nancy & Kelle!


For our August dining adventure, we're taking our readers outside the Tri-Cities area, out of West Michigan, even out of the U.S. and across the Atlantic Ocean - and all the way to Dubai!  Why Dubai?  Because Kelle and Nancy decided to go there on a little vacation; neither had been there before and Nancy was on her way to India.  So, where's Dubai?  It's in the Middle East, along the Persian Gulf.  It's the largest city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Despite dreadfully hot temperatures (around 110 degrees), we decided to go on a "Desert Safari," which included an exciting (actually, wild!) ride across desert sand dunes, a visit to a date grove, a camel ride, and an under-the-stars dinner at a Beduoin camp.  The food was excellent... right down to the traditional Arabic coffee and sweets.

After learning that Dubai had a musical fountain outside the Dubai Mall (adjacent to the Burj Khalifa), we - as loyal and true Grand Haven-ites - knew we just HAD to check it out.  And sure enough, Dubai does have dancing waters... but the Burj Dubai's musical fountain only plays ONE song and has no colored lights.  What a disappointment!  So, it's really more like the musical fountain at the Bellagio in Las Vegas... it can't begin to compete with OUR musical fountain!

The camel ride at night was part of the adventure with our friends, Irene, and her son, JJ.  Irene (a colleague and long-time friend of Nancy's) is originally from Chenai, India and teaches at George Washington University in DC.  Nancy, Irene and JJ continued their journey to India, while Kelle stayed a day to see Abu Dhabi.

Dates from the tree to the table!  We loved this popular Middle Eastern staple.  While we were offered dates as an appetizer, they can also be served covered with chocolate for dessert.   



An abundance of Middle Eastern food was served at the Bedouin Camp in the desert.  We couldn't even pronounce several of the dishes, but were eager to try a little of everything.  The food was spectacular.  






Quite a dinner feast!




The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world at 2,722 feet and 163 floors.  Construction began in Septemer 2004 and officially opened in January 2010.  The observation deck is on the 124th floor.  The high-speed elevator that takes you there is truly amazing.  It travels 10 mitres per second (or about 33 feet per second)... and you don't feel a single thing.

A fellow traveler that works for the US Embassy in Afghanistan recommended we try this restaurant located at the base of the Burj Khalifa at the Dubai Mall.

Red Rooster Tavern in North Muskegon with Chef Char!




It's finally summer in this part of the USA and we couldn't resist a drive "up north" again. We know Michigan is considered pretty far north for the rest of the nation, but folks in Michigan still like to say they are going "up north" to their cottage, for a weekend getaway, or in our case for dinner.  We just like the fact that we're going someplace new and different that includes a gorgeous drive. Not hard to find around here.  

We took the Lake Michigan scenic route to get to the Red Rooster which was part of the reason we made this our July dining adventure. Expect to drive on a winding curvy road that is heavily wooded.  Next thing you know there's a break in the woods, and you are so close to Lake Michigan you think you are driving on the beach.  

We were excited that Chef Char was able to join us for dinner at the Rooster.  The last time we had the pleasure of her company was at The Grand Seafood and Oyster Bar in December.  She has a new adventure going on in her life and we were thrilled to hear about it in person.  

The Rooster offers a very casual and laid back atmosphere so it won't be a problem if you stop in after rolling off one of the beautiful beaches that are close by.  They were advertising live music from Wednesday through Saturday.  We chose to dine on a Tuesday night and were disappointed to learn we missed out on the band.  




Egg Rolls with Dipping Sauce ($8) House made with pork, cabbage, peas and soy, wrapped in a wonton wrapper.  Served with a side of sweet chili and soy.

"We thought this appetizer was delicious and would order it again!"







Steamed mussels on a bed of gluten free pasta ($18)

Kelle:  "This entree turned out to be a disappointment since there wasn't any sauce whatsoever!  We assume it absorbed into the pasta.  However, I was glad to see the menu offered a lot of gluten free options and would gladly stop back to the Rooster for a burger or their famed burrito."    






Goat Cheese Salad ($8) with mixed greens tossed in orange vinaigrette, candied walnuts, apples, and three baked panko encrusted pieces of goat cheese.

Carla:  "I wanted something lighter than a hamburger and ordered the salad with goat cheese.  There was a ton of spinach, but it would have been better if the stems had been removed.  The panko crusted goat cheese was very dry.  I'm with Kelle!  Wish I had ordered a burger." 




Quesadilla ($8) flour tortilla shells filled with baby spinach, queso fresco, and the Rooster's homemade sauce.

Nancy:  "My quesadilla was a little boring, though I must confess that I'm a girl who likes spicy foods.  Nevertheless, it was exactly as described (that is, spinach and cheese inside a flour tortilla).  I was hoping it would be a little more distinctive, so I probably wouldn't order it again."

Bari:  "My quesadilla was quite tasty.  Perhaps the chorizo helped add the zip to it.  I'm not sure that I'd order it again, but who knows depending on my mood?  I agree with the comments about ordering a burger next time and definitely when there is music.  My past experiences with the Red Rooster were burgers and bar food with music, hanging out with sailors and others.  I think they should "stick to their knitting" so to speak and not try to be too fancy.  Old "road houses" or whatever they were/are called should consider specializing in good "bar food."  I did have a nice glass of red wine.  Darn, now I don't remember what it was.  I'll have to bring the notebook along."
 

Jack Daniels' burger ($9) with cheddar cheese, bacon, haystack onions, jack sauce.

Chef Char:  "My burger was cooked to the temp I ordered, medium well.  The crispy bacon strips and battered onions added a little crunch and flavor to the cheeseburger.  The jack sauce, which our waiter told me was "Jack Daniels and pineapple juice and other stuff" when I inquired (not that I was asking for the recipe, but his description was only slightly helpful).  I did not see or taste any of the sauce described on my burger when it came, which was disappointing.  Overall, the burger was what I would expect to see served at a bar and it was fully cooked.  The menu offered several other burgers with different and interesting topping combinations that might be worth a try."

Harbor View Grille in Whitehall with Bari, Nancy & Kelle







Our Harbor View Grille Adventure


Always up for an adventure, the Dining Divas decided to head northward to Harbor View Grille in Whitehall for our June review.  It's a little over a half-hour drive from the Tri-Cities area... a beautiful drive straight up US-31.

The Harbor View Grille is situated on White Lake, which connects to Lake Michigan via a narrow channel, so whether you're seated inside the restaurant or outdoors on the patio, there's a gorgeous view of the water.  In fact, Bari shared a story with us about running a sailboat aground on White Lake (we hope we're not embarrassing her by mentioning this snafu).

We arrived at the Harbor View on Friday (June 6) around 6:45 p.m., and were seated at an indoor table immediately.  (We opted to dine indoors, as it was a little on the cool side that evening).  A whiteboard at the entrance announced the evening's specials, which included deep-fried Montague asparagus as an appetizer and two different perch specials.

Nancy chose to try the Boffo Brown Ale, brewed by the Marshall, Michigan, Dark Horse Brewery.    It was excellent!  Bari chose a glass of cabernet.  And, we unanimously agreed that since it's the season for asparagus, we needed to sample Harbor View's deep-fried version (although we were also mighty tempted by the deep-fried onion rings).  And the asparagus was terrific!

With finger-food as a first course, Nancy said she wanted to use the restroom to wash her hands.  Upon returning to the table, she announced, "You have GOT to go wash your hands... it's AMAZING!"  

WHAT!?!  Anxious to check out the amazing hand-washing experience, off marched Kelle and Bari to the restroom.  What's so special is that Harbor View has an fragrant jar of hand scrub (plus soap, lotion and a bottle of mouthwash) on a ledge above the sink, which leaves your hands feeling smooth, silky, and oh-so-heavenly smelling.  (As we didn't venture into the men's room, we're not sure if the same is offered there.)  But, it's DEFINITELY worth a stop.

Kelle and Nancy ordered the evening's sauteed perch special, which features Lake Erie yellow perch.  It was accompanied by a fresh salad and served on a bed of rice, with sauteed vegetables.  Nancy recalled that in days of yore (1970s), an old Michigan joke was that if you fell into Lake Erie, you'd decay - not drown (due to polluted water).  But, massive clean-up efforts over the years have resulted in dramatic improvements in water quality, and a return to economically important fish species - like the fabled perch.

For dessert, we decided to try Harbor View's chocolate cake.  After all, who wouldn't be tempted by a description that features not only chocolate, but cream cheese!?!  We ate every bit of it... delicious!  (Bari says "speak for yourselves: she only tasted the whpped cream 'cause she's not a chocolate fan.")

On the return trip, the Divas drove South Shore Drive around White Lake when we noticed a sign for the Lakeside Inn.  (It's just past the golf course.)  Curious, we made the right turn, discovering it has risen from the ashes.   (Nancy was long gone and sound asleep through this part of the journey so she missed our little adventure!)  But Bari and Kelle left her in the car to snooze on her own and went inside to check out the new decor and menu.  They let us know it opened up a few months ago, so we decided it was worth a trip back this summer.  We saw a spectacular sunset while cruising on South Shore Drive, but just missed it setting at Duck Lake State Park where you are driving almost right next to Lake Michigan on a short stretch of the road.  A lot of the locals were lined up in their cars since they know this view is next to none.  The drive home made our entire evening a delightful adventure.  




Definitely worth ordering!



Kelle:  "This dish was so tasty and well-prepared.  I could only eat half of it and enjoyed the rest for lunch the next day.  This was only my second time to Harbor View Grille and I was anxious for Bari and Nancy to come.  I'm impressed with all the gluten free options on the menu and the fact that I can come back and get a juicy burger on a gluten free bun.  Next time it's a burger and the deck for me!"


Nancy:  "The perch was absolutely luscious… served in a lemon-y sauce, dusted in seasoned flour and pan fried.   Like Kelle, I couldn't finish it all… and particularly after the asparagus appetizer and generously sized tossed salad (plus, our waiter told us that all of Harbor View's salad dressings are homemade!). Nevertheless, I did make room for the yummy Triple Chocolate Cake.  ;-)  All in all, definitely worthy of an excursion to Whitehall!"


Bari:  "After seeing an order with onion rings, I knew that I'd have them.  My first choice was to join Kelle and Nancy with perch; however, I wanted it in a basket with those onion rings.  That was not to happen-perch was only available for the dinners-so I went to plan B:  a Mushroom Swiss Olive burger with onion rings.  My meal arrived and looked yummy and it was.  The bun was particularly delicious with the burger and the fixings.  The coleslaw was nice, but my focus was on diving into the burger and onion rings.  (I did share them with Nancy and Kelle)."






The jar in the middle made washing our hands so much fun since our skin was incredibly smooth and soft after using it.  We must confess that we washed our hands once we arrived AND again before leaving!

Diva Tips!

We tried to make a reservation since we were driving up on a Friday night, but you can only reserve a table for parties of eight or more.  You are within walking distance of a few shops in downtown Whitehall if you end up having a wait time.  (We were planning to peek inside Posh!)

Great place to sit outside on the deck for a mesmerizing view. 

If you're heading south and have the time after dinner, take the scenic route along South Shore Drive.  We saw a breathtaking view of the sunset along the way.
